Olbia Costa Smeralda Airport is located directly beside the city, while guests embarking in Porto Cervo must continue north by road after landing.

The airport authority lists Costa Smeralda at approximately 34 kilometres from Olbia Airport.

The drive is perfectly manageable, but it adds another transfer after your flight.

If you arrive early in the day, that is rarely a problem.

If you land late, are travelling with young children or want to board as quickly as possible, starting around Olbia becomes more attractive.

Porto Cervo has a slight advantage if La Maddalena Archipelago is the main focus of your charter.

You are already farther north and closer to the islands, allowing the yacht to reach the archipelago with less initial cruising.

However, the difference is not significant enough that you should reject an ideal yacht simply because it embarks in Olbia.

This is important when booking.

The quality of the yacht, crew and overall itinerary is usually more important than choosing Porto Cervo solely to save some cruising time.

A yacht based near Olbia can still create an excellent seven-day Costa Smeralda and La Maddalena itinerary.

But there is an important distinction between where your yacht is based and where you should spend your charter.

Some exceptional charter yachts may embark from Olbia, Porto Rotondo, Cannigione or another nearby marina depending on their previous charter, berth availability and schedule.

I would never choose a worse yacht simply because another yacht happens to start in Porto Cervo.

Your broker or charter specialist can usually build Costa Smeralda into the itinerary regardless of the exact embarkation marina.

For families, I would often give Olbia the advantage.

The main reason is logistics.

Flying into Olbia and transferring directly to the yacht keeps embarkation day straightforward, especially with younger children.

Olbia also makes it easy to begin with the calmer swimming-focused coastline around Tavolara before moving toward Costa Smeralda and La Maddalena.

Porto Cervo can still be excellent for families, particularly those with teenagers who enjoy restaurants, shopping and time ashore.

But if convenience is the priority, Olbia is difficult to beat.

Porto Cervo probably wins for couples seeking a glamorous charter.

Arriving directly into Costa Smeralda, having dinner in Porto Cervo and beginning the next morning with Cala di Volpe or La Maddalena creates a strong luxury-holiday experience.

For couples more interested in privacy and exploring than nightlife, the difference becomes much smaller.

In that case, choose whichever embarkation point gives you access to the better yacht and itinerary.

The yacht's weekly charter rate does not automatically become higher because you embark in Porto Cervo rather than Olbia.

However, your overall spending around Porto Cervo can be considerably higher, particularly during peak summer.

For a first Sardinia yacht charter focused on Costa Smeralda and La Maddalena, Porto Cervo offers the more iconic beginning.

For guests prioritising easy logistics, Tavolara or a broader northeast Sardinia itinerary, Olbia is often the smarter starting point.

And if the best yacht for your group happens to embark from the other location, choose the yacht.
