Olbia, Porto Cervo or Cannigione: Where Should Your Sardinia Charter Begin?

If you are planning a yacht charter around Costa Smeralda and the La Maddalena Archipelago, three of the most practical starting points are Olbia, Porto Cervo and Cannigione.

They are relatively close geographically, but each creates a different beginning to your charter.

Olbia is best for airport convenience and itinerary flexibility. Porto Cervo is best for luxury and immediate access to Costa Smeralda. Cannigione is best for guests whose priority is La Maddalena and relaxed island hopping.

The right choice depends less on which port is "best" and more on where you want to spend most of your week.

Olbia is the easiest starting point for many international guests because Olbia Costa Smeralda Airport is located only around 4 km from the city centre. The airport also provides road connections to the major destinations of northeast Sardinia.

That makes embarkation straightforward.

You can land in Olbia, transfer to the marina and begin your charter without spending a large part of the first day travelling across Sardinia.

Olbia also has substantial yacht infrastructure. D-Marin Olbia currently offers 270 berths and can accommodate yachts up to 150 metres, making the city suitable for everything from sailing yachts to large superyachts.

This makes Olbia particularly useful if you want a broader northeast Sardinia yacht charter rather than focusing only on Costa Smeralda.

Who should choose Olbia?

Choose Olbia if:

you are travelling with children

you want Tavolara included

you want maximum itinerary flexibility

your yacht is already based there

For many charter guests, Olbia is the most practical overall embarkation point in northeast Sardinia.

Porto Cervo is the opposite approach.

Instead of beginning somewhere practical and cruising toward Costa Smeralda, you begin directly inside it.

This is Sardinia's most famous luxury yachting destination, surrounded by superyachts, restaurants, boutiques and the internationally recognised atmosphere of Costa Smeralda.

The marina has extensive infrastructure for large yachts, and Porto Cervo remains on major summer superyacht destinations.

Olbia Airport is still reasonably close. The airport's published travel information gives a driving time of apprm Porto Cervo under normal conditions.

Why start in Porto Cervo?

You can also head north toward La Maddalena without first cruising through the Gulf of Olbia.

For a seven-day charter focused primarily on Costa Smeralda and La Maddalena, that can make the itinerary particularly efficient.

Who should choose Porto Cervo?

Choose Porto Cervo if:

this is your first Costa Smeralda charter

luxury restaurants and nightlife matter

you want the embarkation itself to feel special

you are chartering a motor yacht or superyacht

Costa Smeralda is the main focus of your holiday

For honeymooners, couples and luxury-focused groups, Porto Cervo provides the most memorable start.

Cannigione is less internationally famous than Porto Cervo, but from a yacht charter perspective it can be one of the smartest bases in northern Sardinia.

The town sits inside the Gulf of Arzachena, north of Costa Smeralda and close to the cruising grounds around La Maddalena. Its sheltered waterfront and marina facilities make it an esng the archipelago.

The atmosphere is also considerably more relaxed than Porto Cervo.

You still have restaurants, shops and provisioning nearby, but without the same emphasis on luxury resort life.

Why start in Cannigione?

Cannigione places you in an excellent position for:

Spargi

Budelli

Santa Maria

Palau

Baja Sardinia

It is therefore particularly attractive for crewed catamarans and sailing yachts whose itineraries revolve around short passages and long days at anchor.

You can still include Porto Cervo and Costa Smeralda, but you do not need to spend much of the charter travelling north before reaching the islands.

Who should choose Cannigione?

Choose Cannigione if:

La Maddalena is your main priority

you prefer relaxed cruising to glamorous marinas

you are chartering a catamaran

you want short island-hopping distances

Porto Cervo nightlife is not important

For families and groups primarily interested in swimming, snorkelling and island exploration, Cannigione can be an excellent choice.

Cannigione has the advantage.

Its position makes it particularly convenient for reaching the archipelago and structuring a week around Caprera, Spargi, Budelli and La Maddalena.

Porto Cervo is also very well positioned and works especially well if you want to combine the islands with Costa Smeralda.

Olbia works too, but you will generally spend more of the itinerary moving north.

If La Maddalena represents 70 to 80 percent of what you want from the charter, Cannigione is difficult to ignore.

Porto Cervo.

You begin directly inside Sardinia's most famous luxury cruising area.

If your ideal week revolves around Cala di Volpe, Porto Cervo, beach clubs, restaurants and nearby anchorages, there is little reason to begin farther away unless the yacht you prefer is based elsewhere.

Olbia.

Olbia is positioned south of Costa Smeralda and much closer to Tavolara than either Porto Cervo or Cannigione.

If your itinerary includes Tavolara before continuing north toward Costa Smeralda and La Maddalena, starting from Olbia creates a natural one-direction route.

Olbia and Cannigione both have strong advantages.

Choose Olbia if you want the easiest possible arrival and airport transfer.

Choose Cannigione if you want short cruising distances and several days exploring La Maddalena.

Porto Cervo can still be excellent for families, particularly with teenagers, but its biggest advantages are luxury lifestyle and location rather than convenience.

I would usually favour Cannigione.

Catamarans work exceptionally well around La Maddalena because the islands are close together and the charter can focus on swimming, sailing and relaxing at anchor.

Olbia is a good alternative for catamarans that want to include Tavolara.

Porto Cervo makes more sense when Costa Smeralda itself is central to the experience.

Porto Cervo or Olbia.

A motor yacht's speed makes the differences between these starting points less important because you can cover the distances quickly.

Porto Cervo gives you immediate luxury and Costa Smeralda access.

Olbia gives you easier logistics and greater flexibility between Tavolara, Costa Smeralda and La Maddalena.

For large superyachts, the actual berth availability and yacht schedule may ultimately determine the embarkation point.

Usually not.

If your ideal yacht embarks in Olbia but you originally wanted Porto Cervo, I would normally choose the better yacht.

Likewise, there is little reason to reject an excellent catamaran in Cannigione simply because another yacht happens to start closer to Costa Smeralda.

Your priorities should generally be:

The right yacht

The right crew

The right cabin configuration

The right itinerary

The most practical embarkation port

All three locations are close enough to the main cruising grounds of northeast Sardinia that a good captain can build an excellent itinerary around them.

The simplest answer is:

Choose Olbia for convenience.

Choose Porto Cervo for luxury.

Choose Cannigione for La Maddalena.

For a broad itinerary combining Tavolara, Costa Smeralda and La Maddalena, Olbia is probably the most flexible starting point.

For a classic luxury week around Costa Smeralda and La Maddalena, Porto Cervo provides the most iconic beginning.

For a relaxed charter focused primarily on La Maddalena island hopping, Cannigione may actually be the smartest choice.

Most importantly, let the yacht influence the decision. The difference between an exceptional yacht and an average one will matter far more than an extra hour spent reaching your first anchorage.
